The US Lacrosse Sports Medicine Symposium

The US Lacrosse Sports Medicine Symposium is a great tribute to the outstandingly run and vastly respected organization of US Lacrosse. The next Sports Medicine Symposium is taking place on Friday, January 20, 2017 in Baltimore and will prove to show the leadership that lacrosse has in the medical aspects of sports. One thing that has impressed me with the organization is that they back every rule change, endorsement, equipment change with research.

The Sports Medicine Symposium gives insight for doctors, trainers, physical therapists, strength and conditioning coaches, health staff, coaches, administrators, parents and students to run a HEALTHY LACROSSE PROGRAM. Over the years, the key features for me have been the interactive nature of the sessions and the insight and discussion into equipment changes.

Despite the fact that I played lacrosse for years in high school and at Duke without goggles, I could now understand the reasoning for goggles in women’s lacrosse. It was great to see the background as to why that decision was made.

This year, we will here an update from Berlin where the International Consensus Conference on Concussion in Sport took place. Concussion can be a confusing injury to manage, but when the latest in testing and diagnosis is presented from this Olympic caliber meeting, it is sure to shed light on the topic.

This year’s symposium is geared to tackle high interest topics such as the newest technology and sensors evaluating lacrosse injuries, the legal aspects of athletic trainer coverage, and the new LaxPrep ACL Injury Prevention Program (fresh off the press).

On the topic of ACL injury prevention, I am excited to work with Justin Cooper and do a demonstration on ACL injury risk assessment. It’s great to see a presentation on it, but when it’s a bit more hands on, you will feel more comfortable incorporating it into your own program.
