Heart disease is the number one cause of death amongst Americans, so even though healthier food trends in recent years have lessened the risk, cardiovascular disease is still a big problem for many Americans.

Your heart is one of your most important organs, so taking care of it is an absolute must if you are trying to avoid strokes and heart attacks. The easiest way to do this is by paying attention to what you eat. The harder way to do this is to make sure you get enough exercise, but with those two combined strategies you should be good to go in the heart department.

Lets start with the food however, since convincing yourself to eat healthier is marginally easier than getting the motivation to hit the gym. These superfoods have heart-healthy benefits, so adding them into your diet will only benefit your overall health in the long run.

Salmon– Because it contains omega-3 fatty acids (the good fat), salmon is good for your arteries and should be eaten at least twice a week.

Oatmeal– One of my favorite easy breakfasts is oatmeal with a spoon of reduced fat peanut butter mixed in. Not only does the oatmeal soak up the cholesterol that isn’t absorbed into the bloodstream, but the peanut butter will keep you full throughout the morning.

Citrus fruits– Oranges and grapefruits specifically contain flavonoids that lower the risk of stroke in women as much as 19%. They also contain Vitamin C which is good for lots of things, as well as lowering the risk of heart disease.

Soy– Any product made of soy, like soymilk, soybeans, or tofu contains polyunsaturated fats, fiber, vitamins, and minerals that can help reduce high blood pressure. They are also a great source of protein, which helps especially if you are hitting the gym

Nuts– Walnuts, almonds, pistachios, peanuts and macadamia nuts all contain lots of fiber and Vitamin E, which helps lower cholesterol. Walnuts also contain omega-3 fatty acids, which have heart benefits as well. So adding a few nuts to any meal is a great way to work on your heart health.
