Can Alcohol Increase Your Risk of Breast Cancer?

New research supports a stronger link between alcohol and breast cancer.

wine and cancer

Sometimes, at the end of a stressful day, we all like to have a drink or two. Science has proven that one glass of wine a day can actually have healthy benefits, however it has also been proven that there is a link between breast cancer and alcohol consumption. Researchers believe the reason for this is that alcohol can boost estrogen levels, which can provide fodder for breast cancer cells. Alcohol can also potentially damage DNA, which can create abnormalities.

In the past, there studies have been done on predominantly white women about the link between breast cancer and consuming alcohol, but a new study published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention has found that the same risk exists amongst black women.

Researchers studied more than 22,000 African-American women with breast cancer, and their diagnoses were reviewed and compared to their drinking habits. What they found was that women who drank more than seven drinks weekly had a higher risk of breast cancer than those who drank less. Women who drank more than 14 weekly adult beverages had a 33% higher chance of developing the disease.

So the moral of the story is that it doesn’t matter what race you are, there is a link between alcohol and breast cancer.

Having a glass of wine or two after work, or on occasion is fine, but as with anything else, show restraint, and keep moderation in mind.
