What You Should Know About Exercise and Multiple Sclerosis?

Exercise cannot help prevent MS, but it may help women deal with it.

Multiple Sclerosis is a debilitating disease wherein a person’s immune system attacks their central nervous system and creates all kinds of unpredictable symptoms, from fatigue, to dizziness, difficulty walking, numbness, vision issues, and problems with the bladder or bowel. Depression is also a very common symptom of multiple sclerosis, which can be a real problem because your mental health affects your physical well-being so powerfully.

Women are 2-3 times more likely to develop MS, and also more susceptible to depression which can cause complications with hormones, pregnancy, and menopause.

Multiple Sclerosis is pretty unavoidable for some people, so with that in mind, it’s important to find ways to cope with the disease and it’s symptoms.

Exercise has been proven to be a useful technique to battle depression in people with MS, specifically water-aerobics and yoga, since they allow the body to move in a way that it normally wouldn’t. The idea is that battling the depression element through exercise will help alleviate all the other symptoms, which can be exacerbated by your mental state.

If MS is something you struggle with on a daily basis, you should consider adding some light exercise to your regular routine. At the very least it will help keep you in a positive frame of mind to fight the other symptoms of this horrible disease.
