Out of all of the healthy snacks you can carry around in your purse or gym bag, nuts are pretty high up on that list. They are portable, pretty much non-perishable, and can survive a lot of abuse while still tasting great and giving you a little energy boost when you need it.

I talk a lot about how important it is to eat constantly, and add more protein to your diet, especially If you are working out. Nuts are one of the best ways to accomplish both those goals, but alas, not all nuts are created equal.

Here are the five healthiest nuts for women. Stash a few little baggies of these in your purses or pockets, and you will always have a healthy snack that will help you say no to sugary, unhealthy foods.

Cashews may have a funny shape, but they have the highest iron content of all nuts, which is especially important because iron is the most common nutrient deficiency out there. They also contain Vitamins E, K, and B6.

Brazil Nuts help regulate and produce hormones because they contain selenium, which also helps with the function of antioxidants. They also contain magnesium, zinc, and calcium. Studies also show that brazil nuts help you maintain healthy hair and skin, but just keep in mind you only need to eat about three per day to get the benefits.

Macadamia nuts aren’t just for cookies anymore. They are high in vitamin B1 (thiamin), manganese, copper, and monounsaturated fats (healthy fats), as well as calcium, fiber, B6, and potassium. Nobody really thinks to sit and munch on macadamia nuts as a snack, but with all these health benefits, they really should.

Peanuts offer a good source of protein, magnesium, and phosphorous, so you can’t really go wrong with them. The only thing I would caution you against is eating too much peanut butter, especially because many peanut butters contain unhealthy oils.

Pistachios are great for your eyes, because they contain lots of lutein and zeaxanthin, which help promote healthy vision. They are also a great source of fiber and protein, two things that keep your body running properly.

So there you have it! If you are looking for a way to keep in shape, and stay away from sugary treats, look no further than a bag of nuts!
